Sass tallies four more hits vs. undefeated Augustana

MOLINE, Ill. – Cornell ran into an undefeated Augustana team Thursday, dropping both ends of a baseball doubleheader – 8-0 and 7-3 – at Swanson-Brunner Stadium.

Augustana, receiving national votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, moved to 7-0 on the season. Cornell's challenging pre-conference slate now has it at 0-5.

The Rams sent 10 different pitchers to the mound against the Vikings, six of whom did not allow a run.

Second baseman Caleb Sass (SR/Iowa City, Iowa) totaled four hits from the leadoff spot in Cornell's lineup, boosting his season batting average to .412. The senior went 3-for-5 with a double in the nightcap, marking his second three-hit game of the spring.

James Kent (SO/Phoenix, Ariz.) and Mitch Lawson (SR/Davenport, Iowa) had two hits apiece in Game 2. Lawson scored one run and drove in another. Center fielder Joe Sarnello (SR/Hoffman Estates, Ill.) collected a pair of RBIs. Tony Neuman (JR/Hainesville, Ill) delivered a double.

The Vikings outhit the Rams 14-9 in Game 2 and built a 6-0 lead through two innings. Chad Dzierba (SO/Valparaiso, Ind.), Tyler Lederhos (SR/Aurora, Colo.), Evan Parshall (FR/Riverside, Calif.) and Jack Heneghan (SR/Chicago, Ill.) all provided scoreless innings out of Cornell's bullpen.

Augustana limited the Rams to four hits in the Game 1 shutout, during which the Rams committed three errors.

Zach Stone (SR/Coralville, Iowa) went 1-for-3 with a double. Sass, Kent and Peyton Berthel (SR/Davenport, Iowa) had one hit apiece.

Cornell starter Jake Schope (SO/Littleton, Colo.) gave up five runs over five innings, striking out four. Carter Kriegel (SO/Tama, Iowa) and Eric Medenblik (SR/Fulton, Ill.) both worked one hitless inning in relief.

Coming up – Cornell continues its 14-game nonconference road swing Saturday with a noon doubleheader against 16th-ranked Aurora in Aurora, Ill.
