MOUNT VERNON – Nina Deer (JR/Highland Park, Ill.) and Sydney Swift (JR/Aurora, Colo.) were a potent one-two punch for the Cornell women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Van Metre field at Ash Park. The Rams cruised to a 19-1 victory over the Beloit Buccaneers.
The Rams (3-1 overall) jumped out to an early 11-0 lead behind Deer and Swift, who had the hot sticks in the first half, netting four goals apiece, while Deer added one assist.
In the first half, Cornell outshot the visiting team 26-3, and took advantage of the Bucs' (0-1 overall) 31 turnovers.
The second half was more of the same, with Deer tacking on three more goals. Emily Beehler (SR/Nokomis, Fla.) and Cheyenne Greenenwald (FR/Ingleside, Ill.) added two more goals each. Raquel Gassmann (JR/Santee, Calif.) pitched in two assists.
On the day, the efficient Rams offense fired off 41 shots, scooped up 45 ground balls, and completed 16 clear attempts.
Maddie Althoff (JR/Stillwater, Minn.) recorded the win in net for Cornell and was followed in relief by Sierra Harris (SR/Green Bay Wis.). Over the 60 minutes of action the duo saw just four shots on goal, collecting three saves.
Coming up – The Rams head to St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday, April 3 to take on Hamline University. The MWLC contest is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
