MOUNT VERNON – The Cornell and Illinois College men's basketball teams battled to another end-of-the-wire finish, on Sunday literally to the final second.
Tre Rogers hit a driving bucket in the lane with :00.3 seconds left in regulation to propel the visiting Blueboys to a 67-65 victory inside the Small Sport Center.
Illinois College (5-2) also edged the Rams (3-4) by an 85-79 score Feb. 14 in Jacksonville, Ill.
Sunday's see-saw affair witnessed 11 ties and 12 lead changes. Cornell's last lead at 65-63 came via a Jordan Magnani (JR/Mount Pleasant, Iowa) basket in heavy traffic in the paint with 1:15 left.
The Blueboys tied it at 65-65 on a pair of free throws by Rogers with 53 seconds to go. The Rams came up empty on the ensuing possession, allowing Illinois College to run down the clock for the final shot.
The left-handed Rogers found a driving lane and layed it up off the glass over a couple Cornell defenders for the decisive points, giving him 25 for the contest. Cornell's full-court inbounds pass was deflected away as the final horn sounded.
Magnani poured in a game-high 26 points and reached a career milestone with his 100th made 3-point goal. The junior guard connected on 10-of-18 field goals and also collected four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Cornell junior Marcus Quirk (JR/Edinburgh, Scotland) tied his career high with 15 rebounds. He added 12 points to complete his fourth double-double in seven games this season.
Cooper Kabela (SR/West Branch, Iowa), saddled with foul trouble most of the contest, hit three 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Logan Sharp (SO/Des Moines, Iowa) and Clayton Leipold (JR/Bloomington, Ill.) had six and five points, respectively.
The statistical stalemate saw both teams shoot 41 percent from the field with the Rams holding a 39-37 rebounding edge. The game was tied 35-35 at halftime.
Coming up – Cornell hits the road Thursday for a 6 p.m. game against Eureka (4-2) in Eureka, Ill. The Rams won the first matchup, 96-71, on March 1.
