MOUNT VERNON – The Cornell women's lacrosse team concluded its home schedule Saturday afternoon against the University of Northwestern – St. Paul. The Rams fell to the Eagles at Van Metre Field at Ash Park by a score of 20-15.
For the second consecutive night Cornell found themselves in a hole early. The Eagles (4-2 overall, 3-1 MWLC) lone senior Talia Sherry put them up 3-0 just over four minutes into the match, and by the intermission, Cornell (3-5 overall, 0-4 MWLC) was in a 11-5 deficit.
Elizabeth Ott (SR/St. Paul, Minn.) scored the Rams first goal, taking advantage of a free position attempt at the 13:39 mark. The Rams wouldn't go away easy, using a 4-0 scoring run late in the first half to cut into the Eagles lead. Emily Beehler (SR/Nokomis, Fla.) pitched in two goals, while Nina Deer (JR/Highland Park, Ill.) added one of her own and an assist. Sydney Swift (JR/Aurora, Colo.) recorded her first goal with 1:35 remaining to close out the scoring in the half for the Rams.
In the second half, Anne Methe used her defense to generate offense, intercepting a pass from the goalie and immediately shooting it into the back of the net. Beehler followed that up shortly after with a successful free position attempt, making the score 11-7. After a couple goals by the Eagles to break the Rams momentum, Beehler added two more and Swift shot in one to cut the lead back down to five.
The Eagles offense gained back control while the Rams comeback ran out of time. Beehler ended the night with an impressive six goals and and three assists.
Maddie Althoff (JR/Stillwater, Minn.) went the full 60 minutes in net for the home finale. The junior stopped eleven shots and recorded two ground balls in the loss.
