GALESBURG, Ill. – Cornell's batting lineup peppered the Blodgett Field scoreboard with many crooked numbers in Saturday's 15-9, 14-4 Midwest Conference South Division baseball sweep over Knox.
The Rams (4-12 overall, 2-2 MWC) pounded out 24 hits in the doubleheader and received a pair of quality starts from pitchers Cameron Anfang (SR/Sullivan, Wis.) and Kole Hinrichsen (SO/Washington, Iowa).
Cleanup hitter Ian Renger (SR/Bloomingdale, Ill.) had himself a big day, going 4-for-6 at the plate with five runs and six RBIs. He had three hits in the opener, which saw the Rams break open a 4-3 game with an eight-run eighth inning.
Mitch Lawson (SR/Davenport, Iowa) capped the late outburst with a grand slam, his first homer of the season. Thomas Jones (SR/Lindenhurst, Ill.) finished with three hits, while Zach Stone (SR/Coralville, Iowa) drove in two and scored four times. Peyton Berthel (SR/Davenport, Iowa) collected two hits.
Anfang (2-2) was dominant on the mound, striking out 10 and walking none over six innings. He allowed just four singles and one unearned run.
Hinrichsen (2-3) followed suit in Game 2 with a 10-strikeout performance of his own. The sophomore yielded six hits and three runs through six innings.
The Rams finished off Knox (1-11, 0-6) via the mercy rule on Renger's three-run double in the top of the seventh. Cornell outhit the home team, 11-6.
Leadoff hitter Caleb Sass (SR/Iowa City, Iowa) went 2-for-3 with three runs and two stolen bases. Peyton Berthel had two hits and scored three runs. Alec Boldt (FR/North Liberty, Iowa) doubled and drove in three. Stone added a double and two RBIs.
The Rams have now scored 46 runs through four MWC games.
Coming up – The Rams are home Sunday for a 2 p.m. MWC South Division doubleheader with Illinois College (8-10 overall, 5-1 MWC) at Ash Park.
