Northland edges out Rams in regular season finale, 10-7

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Cornell men's lacrosse late rally came up short against Northland College Saturday afternoon. Northland came out on top 10-7 at a neutral site match in St. Paul, Minn.

Kyle Jussila (JR/Elk River, Minn.) and the Rams needed a little more time but came up short against the Lumberjacks (1-4 overall, 1-4 MLC) in Midwest Lacrosse Conference play. Northland's defense kept the Rams tame in the first half, giving them a 7-2 advantage at the break.

Jussila scored the lone Ram goals in the half, getting one in each quarter. Northland's defense held the Rams to just 13 shots total in the half.

In the third quarter, the Rams (1-6 overall, 1-5 MLC) got started with a goal by Warren Wiberg (SO/Valley Center, Calif.) off an assist from Jesse Small (FR/Nashville, Tenn.) at the 9:11 mark. After another Northland goal, Wiberg and Small connected for another time, cutting the deficit to four.

The Rams applied the pressure in the fourth, after Jussila went on his own 3-0 scoring run, putting the Rams down two with 5:53 remaining. Northland's defense stood tall and kept the Rams from scoring again before time expired.

Cornell in the second half outshot Northland 18-10 and completed twice as many clear attempts. Elliot Smith (SO/Redmond, Ore.) was stout for the Rams defense, causing four turnovers and picking up four ground balls.

Evan Begner (FR/Evergreen, Colo.) recorded the loss in net for the Rams, stopping 13 shots on the night.

Coming up – The Rams will compete in the MLC Tournament May 5. The opponent, time and location are to be determined.
