JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Cornell's baseball team gave up a big late-inning lead in Game 1 and surrendered nine unearned runs in Game 2 as Midwest Conference South Division leader Illinois College picked up a 12-11, 19-9 sweep Saturday at Joe Brooks Field.
The Rams (9-17 overall) slipped to 6-6 in divisional play at the halfway point. They'll have a chance to get two games back Sunday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Illinois College (14-13, 11-4 South) at Ash Park.
Cornell outhit the Blueboys 15-9 but left 15 runners on base in Game 1, which proved costly in another wild finish between the two teams. The Rams were seemingly in control after scoring seven times in the top of the eighth to build an 11-3 lead.
The Blueboys rallied for six runs in the eighth and completed the comeback with three more in the bottom of the ninth. The tying and winning runs were unearned.
The finish spoiled a strong seven-inning outing by Cornell senior Cameron Anfang (SR/Sullivan, Wis.), who struck out eight and walked just one. Anfang gave up only four hits and three runs.
Freshman Darren Mancke (FR/Oswego, Ill.) went 4-for-6 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Zac Stallman (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) tallied three hits, while Caleb Sass (SR/Iowa City, Iowa), Peyton Berthel (SR/Davenport, Iowa) and Thomas Jones (SR/Lindenhurst, Ill.) added two apiece. Zach Stone (SR/Coralville, Iowa) homered.
Illinois College clubbed eight home runs and took advantage of four Cornell errors in its seven-inning Game 2 victory. Cornell starting pitcher Kole Hinrichsen (SO/Washington, Iowa) went two innings and allowed 11 runs, only two of which were earned.
Stallman led Cornell's 11-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Sass doubled, tripled and drove in two. James Kent (SO/Phoenix, Ariz.) added two hits and two runs for Cornell, which stranded 13 total runners.
