MOUNT VERNON – Grinnell's three-run rally in the eighth inning Tuesday night spoiled Cornell's run at the Midwest Conference South Division baseball championship with a 10-8 win over the Rams at Ash Park Field.
Cornell slipped to 14-20 overall, 11-9 in the division with four games remaining against the Pioneers (10-8 overall, 10-8 MWC South) to close out the regular season.
The back-and-forth game saw Cornell – the visiting team on the scoreboard – forge ahead 8-7 with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Zac Stallman (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Nathan White (SR/Union Grove, Wis.) delivered RBI hits in the frame.
Cornell sophomore starter Kole Hinrichsen (SO/Washington, Iowa), the reigning MWC Pitcher of the Week, left the game in the bottom of the eighth with an 8-7 lead and one out and two runners on. Grinnell tied it on a slap double down the left-field line.
The Pioneers took the lead on a passed ball, and then added an insurance run on a wild pitch, making it 10-8.
Cornell brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth when the game ended on an infield flyout.
White and James Kent (SO/Phoenix, Ariz.) both went 3-for-5 with a double to lead Cornell's 14-hit attack. White drove in a pair of runs. Catcher Thomas Jones (SR/Lindenhurst, Ill.) added two hits and two RBIs. Peyton Berthel (SR/Davenport, Iowa) also had two hits.
Sass reached base safely for the 24th consecutive game. Berthel extended his such streak to 21 games in a row.
Coming up – Cornell hosts Grinnell for a 4 p.m. doubleheader in Thursday's home finale. The teams then meet in Grinnell for two games Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
