DECATUR, Ill. – Cornell's women's tennis team got its season underway Saturday, dropping two duals at the Dorothy McClure Tournament hosted by Millikin.
No. 1 player
Emmaline Fievet registered two wins for the Rams in the finale, a 5-4 battle against Dubuque. Cornell lost 9-0 to Greenville in the opening meet.
The short-handed Rams (0-2 overall) had their work cut out, giving up two points in each dual with forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Cornell still managed to hang tough with Dubuque, winning four of the seven contested matches. That included a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 victory by Fievet at the No. 1 singles position. Fievet partnered with
Amanda Dragon at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 victory.
The Rams earned straight-set singles wins at No. 4 from
Ashley Mink (7-5, 6-1) and No. 5 from freshman
Josalin McKeever (6-0, 6-0), marking her first collegiate victory.
Cornell's No. 2 doubles pair
Makayla Johnson and Mink came up just short in an 8-6 loss.
The Rams surrendered all seven contested matches against Greenville. Providing the most resistance for Cornell was Johnson (7-5, 6-1 loss) at No. 2 singles and McKeever (6-1, 6-4 loss) at No. 5.
Coming up – The Rams return to the courts next Saturday, Sept. 4 for a 12:30 p.m. meet against Buena Vista in Storm Lake.
