DECORAH – Cornell's men's soccer team drew a tough assignment in Wednesday's season opener, falling 4-1 to No. 5 nationally-ranked Luther on the road.
The young Rams (0-1) played the Norse even over the final 69 minutes of regulation. Three early goals by Luther (1-0) proved too much to overcome.
Freshman
Mardoche Ntonku accounted for Cornell's goal at the 82-minute mark. His first collegiate score was also his first shot attempt as a Ram.
The Rams fired nine total shots, including two each from
Sam Brueck and
Zach Miller. The Norse attempted 13 shots and held a decisive 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Will Bickel made his Cornell debut at goalkeeper, posting four saves in a full 90 minutes of action.
Cornell now turns its focus to the home opener and the rival Coe Kohawks with a 5 p.m. Bremner Cup match Monday.
