Rams turn tables on Dubuque with 5-4 victory

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell got the most out of its women's tennis lineup Friday and turned the tables on Dubuque with a 5-4 dual win inside the Small Sport Center Arena.

The Rams (3-6 overall) won five of the six contested matches in avenging a 5-4 early-season loss to the Spartans (2-8) on Aug. 28. Cornell showed improvement in Friday's rematch, despite competing with only four players.

With the meet tied at 4-4, senior Amanda Dragon clinched it for the Rams with a straight-sets 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. She capped an unbeaten night on the court, which included an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with partner Emmaline Fievet.

Fievet beat Alyssa Stevenson 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 1 singles position. The Rams also received a 6-1, 6-3 win from Ashley Mink at No. 3 singles. No. 2 player Makayla Johnson dropped a tight 7-6 (6), 7-5 decision.

Mink and Johnson collected their first doubles win as partners, coasting 8-1 at No. 2.

The Spartans received three default wins in the dual.

The Rams play host to rival Coe in a Bremner Cup match at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Cornell leads the 2021-22 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series 3-1.
