WAVERLY – Cornell got its track & field season off to a promising start, setting numerous personal-best marks at Saturday's Chelsey Henkenius Invitational.

The Rams took second in the team race behind host Wartburg in both men's and women's divisions.

Sophomore newcomer Natalie McAllister had an impressive Ram debut, nearly breaking the school in the women's high jump. McAllister placed second in clearing 5-3, only .25 inches shy of the program's standard held by Libby Schnoor (2017).

The women received wins from Sidney Brown in the 400 (1:07.85) and Billie Fogarty in the mile (5:37.11). Fogarty added a fourth-place finish in the 1000 (3:26.51).

Freshman Natalie Neuhaus ran second in the mile (5:42.35), while Emilia Lambert-Mergendahl was runner-up in the 400 (1:11.47). Taylor Cruz led the Rams in the throwing events, taking fourth in the shot put (35-7.75). McAllister was fifth (34-10.50).

The Rams totaled 76 points in the men's events, highlighted by two runner-up efforts each from senior sprinter Jacob Engelken and senior thrower Brad Pace. Engelken was second in the 60 (7.17) and 200 (23.46). Pace took second in the shot put (42-11) and weight throw (41-11.50).

Freshman Thomas Machande won the 400 in 55.82. Freshmen Tyler Bilskie (4:44.98) and Gabe Hunt (4:50.81) went 3-4 in the mile. Isaak Hutchings, also a freshman, ran fourth in the 1000 (2:38.47).

Brock Flack threw the weight 41-2.50 for third place.

The Rams host the annual Hilltop Invitational next Saturday, Jan. 22 in the Small Sport Center Arena. Action gets underway at 10 a.m.
