Davidson wins 5000, anchors victorious DMR at Grinnell

GRINNELL – Cornell senior Aaron Davidson blew away the field in the men's 5000-meter run and anchored an impressive victory in the distance medley relay at Saturday's Darren Young Invitational hosted by Grinnell.
 
The two-time champion Davidson won the 5000 with a swift clocking of 15:14.63, ranking No. 1 in the Midwest Conference this season. He crossed the finish line 21 seconds ahead of Nebraska Wesleyan's runner-up Colby Karr.
 
The men's distance medley quartet of freshman Gabe Soda, senior Jacob Engelken, freshman Isaak Hutchings and Davidson turned in a winning time of 10:45.75, finishing 33 seconds in front of its nearest competitor. The mark ranks in the top 50 in NCAA Division III this indoor campaign.
 
Soda added a third-place showing in the mile (4:27.40). Cornell's 4x200 relay of Engelken, Samuel O'Hara, Doniel Greiner and Nathan Watters took fifth in 1:38.00. Emery Bird was sixth in the 5000 (15:50.62).
 
Brad Pace finished ninth in both the weight throw (48-00.75) and shot put (42-00.50).
 
Billie Fogarty highlighted Cornell's women's performances with a runner-up effort in the 5000. The junior crossed in 19:20.25 for a top-five MWC mark.
 
Sydney Brown was fifth in the 400 (1:05.43). Katie Lammers, Mya Numedahl, Sam See and Taylor Walsh ran on the sixth-place distance medley (14:33.59). Natalie McAllister cleared 4-11 in the high jump for sixth.
 
Cornell's men scored 34 team points, the women 20. Both finished eighth in the team standings.
 
The Rams compete at the University of Dubuque Spartan Invitational Friday in Dubuque. Action gets underway at 2 p.m.
