APPLETON, Wis. – Cornell's men's basketball team took care of business on the road Sunday and pulled even with Ripon for first place in the Midwest Conference with a decisive 81-67 victory over Lawrence.
The Rams regrouped quickly from Saturday's 85-77 home loss to Lawrence, getting 60 points from its starting senior trio of
Jordan Magnani,
Cooper Kabela and
Marcus Quirk to remain in solid position for an MWC regular-season title.
Cornell (15-7 overall, 10-3 MWC) goes into the final week tied with Ripon (10-3 MWC) atop the standings, one game up in the loss column to Grinnell (8-4 MWC), which the Rams host Thursday night.
The Rams have three games left against teams they've already beaten this season, starting with Tuesday's 5:30 p.m. road contest against Monmouth (3-18 overall, 2-11 MWC).
Magnani posted 25 points, seven rebounds and two steals to pace Cornell in the rematch with Lawrence (10-13 overall, 7-7 MWC). The Rams got to the foul line 29 times, led by Magnani's 9-of-12 touch.
Quirk capped a strong weekend against the Vikings with 19 points and eight rebounds Sunday. Kabela hit all six of his free throw attempts and finished with 16 points.
Logan Christensen was the fourth Cornell scorer to reach double figures with 10 points.
Logan Sharp grabbed eight rebounds for the Rams, who held a 43-35 edge on the boards.
The Rams cooled off Lawrence's perimeter game to 35.8-percent shooting, one day after the Vikings connected on 14 threes in Mount Vernon.
Quirk, Kabela and Magnani each hit a 3-pointer during Cornell's 20-7 surge to start the game. The Rams opened the second half on a 14-4 run – highlighted by back-to-back threes from Quirk – and built the margin to 53-30 with 15:10 remaining.
