MOUNT VERNON – Saturday's regular-season men's basketball home finale was a day for Cornell's seniors. And
Cooper Kabela,
Jordan Magnani,
Marcus Quirk,
Daniel Burford and
Hart Gallentine didn't disappoint.
Cornell's senior five combined for 45 points, outscoring Beloit's entire team in an 81-44 Midwest Conference rout inside the Small Sport Center.
The postseason-bound Rams finished a strong regular-season at 17-8 overall, 12-4 in the MWC. The 12 conference wins are the most by a Cornell team since the 2008-09 NCAA Tournament squad, which went 12-4 as members of the Iowa Conference.
Cornell finished runner-up finish in the MWC, by virtue of Ripon's win at Knox Saturday. The Red Hawks went 13-3 in league play and will host the four-team MWC Tournament Feb. 25-26 in Ripon, Wis.
Magnani set the tone early, sinking a 3-pointer on Cornell's first possession and scoring 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half. He added five rebounds, five assists and two steals to an impressive stat line over 27 minutes.
Kabela, the program's all-time scoring leader, closed out a sensational home career with 16 points, bumping his career total to 1,580.
Quirk delivered nine points and seven rebounds. Gallentine and Burford came off the bench to contribute six and five points, respectively. Burford had three assists.
The accomplished senior class was recognized prior to tipoff, and played a brief stretch together on the court late in the contest. They went out one at a time to a home crowd ovation. Collectively, the seniors accounted for more than 3,800 points and 1,400 rebounds over their careers.
The Rams had 14 players score against the Buccaneers (5-20 overall, 3-13 MWC) and raced to a 41-20 lead by halftime. Cornell hurried the visiting team to 21 turnovers and 25.8-percent shooting.
Cornell outscored Beloit in the paint, 44-10.
