Kali March drained six 3-pointers and Cornell stayed in the hunt for a Midwest Conference Women's Basketball Tournament berth with a 65-38 win over Beloit Saturday in the Small Sport Center.
The Rams (12-8 overall, 7-6 MWC) kept pace with Illinois College (8-6 MWC), which also won Saturday, in a battle for the fourth and final spot into the tournament.
With a quick change to the schedule, Cornell now travels to Illinois College for a 4 p.m. matchup Sunday in Jacksonville, Ill. The Lady Blues beat Cornell, 72-51, back on Nov. 30 in Mount Vernon.
Ripon (14-1), Monmouth (10-5) and Knox (10-5) have already clinched a berth in the four-team MWC Tournament, held Feb. 25-26 in Ripon, Wis.
It was all Rams in a dominant Senior Day game they never trailed. March splashed two quick threes, followed by buckets from
Ani'ja Simmons and
Madison Wauters that put Cornell ahead 10-0 only 2:32 into the contest.
March made four 3-pointers in the first quarter alone and finished with a game-high 19 points. The sophomore guard shot 6-of-8 from long range, coming within one 3-point make of tying the school's single-game record. March also led the team with five assists.
Wauters netted 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
Madison Osborn added 10 points and three assists. Simmons had a solid outing with 10 rebounds, six points and four assists.
Grace Werlin, Cornell's lone senior, earned her first start of the season and converted 3-of-4 free throws. The fourth-year team leader was recognized in front of the home crowd prior to tipoff.
The Rams pressured Beloit (4-20 overall, 0-16 MWC) into 23 turnovers and held the Buccaneers to 29.4-percent shooting. Cornell connected on nine 3-pointers for the game.
