MOUNT VERNON – Senior
Jordan Magnani scored his 1,000th career point and the Rams manhandled Monmouth, 82-38, in a Midwest Conference men's basketball rout Thursday night inside the Small Sport Center.
Cornell (12-5 overall, 7-1 MWC) maintained its two-game lead atop the MWC standings with an impressive all-around effort against the Fighting Scots (3-14 overall, 2-7 MWC).
Magnani triggered Cornell's quick start with seven points in opening 3:20 of the contest. The four-year starting guard sank a mid-range jumper from the baseline with 7:50 left in the first half for his 1,000th point as a Ram.
Magnani became the 25th member of Cornell's 1,000-point club, achieving the milestone in his 77th career game. He finished the contest with 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists in only 26 minutes of action.
Senior
Cooper Kabela, who tallied his 1,000th point in the 2019-20 finale in his 76th game, vaulted past Reggie Greenwood (2010-14) to No. 3 on the program's all-time scoring list with nine points, putting his career count at 1,445. Kabela contributed nine points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Rams wasted little time in making Thursday's contest a one-sided show. A 3-pointer by
Logan Christensen gave Cornell a 21-4 lead only eight minutes in. The margin ballooned to 39-13 on a
Jayden Meeker bucket with 5:02 left in the first half.
Cornell led 47-23 at intermission and outscored the visiting team 35-15 in the second half.
The Rams had 21 players see the court – 11 of whom scored – on a hot-shooting night in which they made 11-of-25 3-point goals.
Zach Ingle went 3-of-4 from distance and finished with a team-high 15 points.
Marcus Quirk had 10 points, Meeker eight.
Cornell held the Fighting Scots to 27.4-percent shooting, including 0-of-15 from 3-point land. The Rams dominated Monmouth on the boards, 54-30.
The Rams are on the road Saturday to face Knox (6-11 overall, 2-7 MWC)) at 1 p.m. in Galesburg, Ill.
