AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Cornell's baseball lineup erupted for a season-high 20 hits and outslugged Nebraska Wesleyan, 17-9, Thursday morning at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Rams (2-5) pushed across runs in seven of the nine innings and had six players record multiple-hit games against the Prairie Wolves (6-5) out of the American Rivers Conference.
Junior shortstop
James Kent had himself quite a day at the plate, going 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles, three runs and three RBIs. Catcher
Cody Zahn went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
First baseman
Drew Logel made the most of his two at-bats late in the contest, cracking a solo home run in the eighth and launching a three-run blast in the ninth that capped Cornell's offensive outburst.
The Rams also got two hits apiece from
Kale Rose,
Sam Williamson and
Ryan Rader. Williamson, a sophomore outfielder, doubled, scored four times and drove in two runs. Rader collected three RBIs,
Seth Beals two.
Cornell put the pressure on early, charging ahead 8-0 through 2 1/2 innings. The Rams struck for four runs in the fifth, and after Nebraska Wesleyan cut the margin to 13-9, Cornell put the game out of reach with four more runs in the top of the ninth.
Junior right-hander
Preston Wright (2-0) earned the pitching win, striking out seven in 4.1 innings of relief.
Aiden Rosenthal struck out three of the four batters he faced to end the game.
The Rams wrap up spring break play at 8 a.m. (Central time) Friday against Fitchburg State in Winter Haven, Fla.
