Women win Rittgers Invite; Rams take 7-6 lead in Bremner Cup

CEDAR RAPIDS – Cornell's women captured the Rittgers Invitational team championship Friday night and the Rams came away with two pivotal Bremner Cup points in dual scoring with rival Coe.
 
Billie Fogarty (3000 steeplechase), Natalie Neuhaus (5000), Madison Osborn (200) and Natalie McAllister (high jump) won event titles for the Rams, who edged St. Ambrose for the women's team crown, 124-118.
 
Cornell's men placed third in the eight-team field with 98 points, led by freshmen individual champions Gabe Soda (1500) and Isaak Hutchings (800).
 
Cornell swept the Kohawks in head-to-head scoring to take a 7-6 lead in the 2021-22 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series with two competitions remaining. Cornell's men won 96-82, and the women 95-90.
 
The Rams can claim the Bremner Cup traveling trophy with a win at softball (Game 1) April 27 or baseball May 3. Both events are held in Cedar Rapids.    
 
Neuhaus (20:36.31) and Fogarty (20:36.35) crossed the finish line a mere .04 seconds apart with a 1-2 showing in the 5000-meter run. Fogarty took the 3000 steeplechase title with an 11-second victory in 12:37.95.
 
Osborn had a busy meet in the sprints, highlighted by a win in the 200 (26.60) and anchoring the second-place 4x400 relay of Sidney Brown, Sam See and Caitlyn Mar (4:21.64). Osborn was third in the 400 (1:02.40), fourth in the 100 (13.18) and part of the third-place 4x100 relay (52.95).  
 
McAllister tied for the winning height in the high jump (4-9) and ran second in the 100 hurdles (15.74). Katie Lammers took third in the 1500 (5:21.47). Miranda Hall was fourth in the 5000 (22:38.99) and Cari Pickup fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:13.26).
 
In the men's division, Soda (4:07.76) and Hutchings (4:09.46) finished 1-2 in the 1500 race. Hutchings beat 25 competitors in the 800 with a winning time of 2:02.00 and then anchored the second-place 4x400 relay (3:35.08) comprised of Jacob Engelken, Fisher Isaacson and Nathan Watters.
 
The Rams received runner-up performances from Luke Murray in the 3000 steeplechase (11:29.97) and Tyler Bilskie in the 5000 (16:11.33).
 
Machande placed fourth in the 400. Brad Pace was fourth in the javelin (123-7).
 
The Rams compete at Mount Mercy's Mustang Open Saturday, April 23 in Cedar Rapids.
