MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's baseball team pulled off another late comeback at Ash Park Saturday, upending Midwest Conference's first-place Chicago with a 3-2 walk-off win in 10 innings.
The Rams rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth and then won it on a misplayed ground ball that enabled
Darren Mancke to score with two outs in the 10th.
It was the fourth home win this season in which the Rams came back from a deficit in the seventh inning or later. It was a needed win for Cornell (11-19 overall), which stayed in contention for a postseason berth at 6-9 in the MWC.
Chicago (17-9 overall) slipped into a first-place tie with Lawrence at 12-4.
Game 2 of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain. The Rams and Maroons will play two games at noon Sunday in Mount Vernon.
Winning pitcher
Preston Wright (4-2) got the job done in tough situations late, allowing one hit over two scoreless innings. The Maroons had a runner at third with one out in the ninth. Wright struck out the final batter in the 10th with the bases loaded.
Mancke, who went 4-for-5 at the plate, started Cornell's two-out rally in the 10th with an infield single. He advanced to third on a hit into right center by
Evan Waring.
Cody Zahn brought home Mancke with the winning run on a soft hopper that was bobbled by the third baseman. Zahn reached first safely and Cornell's team quickly emptied the dugout for an on-field celebration.
The Rams outhit Chicago, 12-7.
Kale Rose,
Seth Beals and Waring all had two hits apiece.
