GRINNELL – Senior
Logan Sharp torched in-state rival Grinnell for a career-high 34 points as the red-hot Rams rolled to their sixth consecutive victory, 104-94, in Midwest Conference men's basketball action Tuesday night inside Darby Gymnasium.
Cornell shot a blistering 74.0 percent (37-of-50) from the field and completed its first regular-season sweep of the Pioneers since the 1991-92 campaign. In the process, the Rams (10-10 overall, 8-3 MWC) jumped into sole possession of second place in the league race with five games to go.
The Rams reached the century scoring mark for the third time this season, thanks to an exceptional night from Sharp. The 6-foot-9 center buried 17-of-19 shots from the field – the third-most made field goals ever by a Ram – and added five rebounds over 26 dominant minutes on the court.
The Pioneers (6-14 overall, 2-10 MWC) once again had no answer for Sharp, who registered a school-record 20 rebounds in the team's first matchup, a 100-78 Cornell win in December.
Cornell distributed 34 assists, a new single-game school record.
Jayden Meeker led that department with a career-high 10 assists to go with 10 points for his third double-double of the season. Meeker was only two rebounds shy of a rare triple-double and also posted four blocked shots in a terrific outing.
Zach Ingle handed out eight assists while netting 20 points.
Izic Mackey provided 14 points off Cornell's bench.
Jordan Magnani totaled 11 points and five assists.
Logan Christensen added nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Rams raced to a 54-40 halftime lead on blazing 20-of-26 shooting from the field. The margin ballooned to 90-70 on an Ingle 3-pointer with 5:26 remaining.
Cornell connected on 23-of-31 free throws for the game and outrebounded the home team, 44-34.
Coming up – The Rams play host to Knox (6-14 overall, 4-7 MWC) at 3 p.m. Saturday for a Senior Day matchup inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center. Cornell won the first meeting, 72-47.
