MONMOUTH, Ill. – Cornell's men's soccer team had its three-match winning streak snapped Tuesday in a hard-fought 2-1 Midwest Conference setback to Monmouth on the road.
The short-handed Rams (4-5-3 overall, 2-1 MWC) rallied from a 1-0 first-half deficit and were tied with 15 minutes left to go, when the Fighting Scots (2-8-1 overall, 1-1-1 MWC) delivered the winning score.
First-year
Sam Burmeister put the Rams on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal early in the second half. His fourth goal of the season knotted the match at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
Cornell's attack put the pressure on Monmouth late with eight second-half shots. The Rams held a 13-11 advantage in total shots for the match.
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead at the 40-minute mark. It was the first goal allowed by Cornell starting goalkeeper
Floris Huiskers in 308 minutes of field time dating back to Sept. 17. Huiskers recorded four saves over 61 minutes before having to leave a 1-1 match.
Jeremy Spina came on in relief for his fourth appearance of the season and collected one save.
Burmeister paced Cornell's offense with four shots. He and
Sebastian Cisneros led the team with two shots on goal apiece.
Eddie Garces added two shot attempts.
