JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Cornell's men claimed medals in three events during Friday's opening day at the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Illinois College.

The Rams stand fifth in the team race with 29 points. Saturday's action resumes at 10:30 a.m.

Sophomore Gabe Soda raced to a season-best time of 4:19.86 to finish runner-up in the mile. He was one second behind the winning mark.

Cornell received third-place all-conference showings from freshman LaQuanta Crawford in the high jump and the sprint medley relay. Crawford cleared a collegiate-best height of 6 feet, 2 inches.

The sprint medley foursome of sophomore Niko Platre, junior Doniel Greiner, freshman Gavin Soukup, and sophomore Fisher Isaacson took third in 4:19.86.

The 5,000 saw junior Noah Lutzke place sixth (15:45.15) and sophomore Tyler Bilskie finish seventh (15:50.94).Â
Senior Nathan Watters finished eighth in the shot put (40-11.50) and freshman Thomas Coble took ninth (4:29.90) in the mile.
The 4x200 relay finished sixth in 1:36.13 with the team of Platre, Jaxin McGuire, Watters and Greiner.
