AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Cornell senior pitcher
Kole Hinrichsen crafted a complete-game one-hit shutout in Thursday's 5-0 Game 1 baseball win over St. Norbert at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Rams were one out away from securing a sweep when St. Norbert connected for a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win the nightcap, 5-3.
Cornell moved to 7-4 overall with one more game remaining on its spring break trip in central Florida. The Rams play Stockton (5-6) at 8:45 a.m. (central time) Friday in Auburndale, Fla.
Hinrichsen (2-1) was his dominant self on the hill, recording the team's first shutout win since May 2021 (Cameron Anfang vs. Knox). The right-hander struck out 10 and issued just one walk over seven stress-free innings.
St. Norbert's lone hit was a clean single to right with two outs in the third. Hinrichsen retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and did not allow a runner to advance past second base the entire game.
Vince Zipperer went 3-for-4 to lead Cornell's 10-hit attack.
James Kent and
Colin Konicek had two hits apiece.
Seth Beals belted his second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth that pushed the Rams ahead 4-0.
The Rams were in control for most of Game 2, leading 3-1 in the fourth after a two-run homer by
Drew Logel, his team-high third of the season. Logel accounted for all three of the team's RBIs.
St. Norbert (5-8) singled home a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 3-2. The Green Knights had runners at first and third with two outs when Trevor Reinhardt ended it with a homer to left-center.
Left-hander
Daulton Montagna gave the Rams 5.2 quality innings, allowing one run while striking out six.
Carter Kriegel took the loss in relief.
St. Norbert outhit the Rams, 10-4.
