Watters delivers huge PR, all-MWC medal in discus

GRINNELL – Senior Nathan Watters earned all-conference status with a huge personal record in the discus to pace Cornell's men during Day 1 of the Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Darren Young Track and Field Complex.
 
The Rams stand sixth with 21 points through seven scored events. The meet resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
 
Watters rose to the occasion in the discus, where he was seeded eighth entering the meet. He turned in a lifetime-best toss of 139 feet, 5 inches to secure third place and his first career all-MWC medal in the throws. 

Cornell had two point scorers in the 1500, highlighted by a fourth-place run by Fisher Isaacson (3:58.92). First-year teammate Thomas Coble took eighth (4:07.57). Tyler Bilskie (33:44.34) and Brodie Callahan (33:50.91) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 10000.

Senior Andrew Corley provided team points in the hammer throw (138-2) with a fifth-place finish.

First-year Austin Wilkins landed a spot in Saturday's finals in both hurdles races. He qualified seventh in the 110 hurdles (17.42) and eighth in the 400 hurdles (1:10.53). Doniel Greiner moved into the 100 finals, clocking the seventh-fastest prelims time (11.02).
