LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Cornell's men took on a tough postseason assignment Wednesday, falling 18-4 to top-seeded Lake Forest in the semifinals of the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament at Mohr Field.
The fourth-seeded Rams gave up four unanswered goals to start the game and couldn't recover against the MLC regular-season champions on their home field.
Cornell finished the campaign at 5-12 overall, after placing fourth in the MLC regular season. Coach
Lane Zierten guided the Rams into the tournament for the third year in a row.
Lake Forest (12-4) moves on to Saturday's championship game to face No. 2 seed Dubuque, which advanced with an 18-10 win over Northwestern.
The Rams could never get going against Lake Forest, which built a 6-1 advantage after one quarter and led 13-1 at the half. Cornell netted three of its four goals in the final period.
Defender
Torii Greiskalns capped a terrific sophomore season, pacing the Rams with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Greiskalns padded his single-season school record for caused turnovers to 47.
Second-year goalie
Thomas Cook added 17 saves to his program record season total, which now stands at 297. He faced 52 total shots from the Foresters.
Fifth-year
Kyle Jussila, the most prolific scorer in Cornell history, notched his 148th and final collegiate goal with 8:52 remaining in regulation.
Ethan Kupka,
Luke Baldwin and
Warren Wiberg added one goal apiece for the Rams, who were limited to 21 shots for the game.
The Foresters held a 66-32 advantage in ground balls.
