MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's soccer team returned to the competition field after a 13-day layoff Wednesday night and was dealt a 5-0 setback to visiting Coe.
Cornell had a three-match series winning streak snapped against the Kohawks (3-3-1), who now holds a 4-1 lead in the 2023-24 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series.
The young Rams (0-3-1) closed an opening stretch against tough nonconference foes, who are a combined 15-8-5 this season.
Cornell had scoring opportunities against the Kohawks, attempting a season-high 16 shots. Junior Kyle Hard paced the Rams with six shots, followed by first-year Savannah Sonenstahl with four and senior co-captain Elissafe Moreno with three. Hard delivered two shots on goal.
Sophomore Sabrina Ibanez recorded five saves in 78 minutes at keeper. First-year Kiara Wahl-Bickham came on to finish the match, allowing one goal in her first collegiate match.
Ibanez raised her season saves total to 46. She entered the day ranked seventh nationally in saves per match (13.67).
The Kohawks built a 2-0 halftime lead and added three more scores in the second half.
Coming up – The Rams open Midwest Conference play Saturday with an 11 a.m. road match against Beloit.
