MOUNT VERNON – Three days after breaking Cornell's all-time points mark, junior midfielder
George Archer now owns a share of the program's career record for goals scored.
Archer followed up Saturday's hat trick with two more goals Tuesday, fueling the Rams to a 3-0 men's soccer win over the visiting Central Dutch.
Archer pulled even with Mike Zarate (1992-95) atop Cornell's all-time list for goals with 30. He bumped his career-record points total to 73, which includes 13 points through only five matches this season.
The Rams (3-4-3) set the tone early against Central (3-3-2), thanks to a pair of quick strikes from Archer in the opening 15 minutes. Archer booted home a penalty kick just 2 minutes, 17 seconds into the contest. Not long after, first-year
Fox Wight assisted Archer for another score that pushed the Rams ahead 2-0.
Junior
Gaurab Khadka added some insurance for the Rams at the 69-minute mark, scoring on an assist from
Floris Huiskers. It was Khadka's fourth goal of the fall.
Huiskers worked all 90 minutes in net to earn the team's first shutout of the season. The sophomore registered five saves.
The Rams accounted for 11 of their 14 total shots in the first half. Archer finished with five attempts. Khadka,
Aidan Lerch and
Mohamed Abdelrahman added two shots apiece.
Coming up – The Rams (1-0 MWC) dive back into conference play Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. home match against Lawrence (0-4-3 overall, 0-0-1 MWC).
