MOUNT VERNON – An impressive performance by Cornell sophomore goalkeeper Sabrina Ibanez wasn't quite enough in a 2-1 loss to William Penn (3-2-0) on Thursday night at the Cornell College Soccer Field.
Ibanez, after 90 minutes of play, claimed 20 saves for a new career high. It's the first time in Ibanez's career that she has reached 20 or more saves in a game and the only time in her career that she's had back-to-back games with double-digit saves. She now has 41 saves through three games.
The Rams (0-2-1) jumped out in front of the Statesmen, 1-0, at 19:39 after a stellar defensive play by junior Elissafe Moreno. A cross by senior Kara Rivard set up sophomore Krystin Kamrath for a shot in the penalty box but she lost the ball and it was stolen by a Statesmen defender.
Before they could leave the penalty box, Moreno altered the pass and delivered a strike to the bottom left corner for the Rams' lone goal of the game.
At the 37-minute mark, the Statesmen evened the score on an assisted goal by Alessia Piombo. The Rams would hold the Statesmen scoreless through the rest of the first half.
