LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Cornell's women's tennis team wrapped up Midwest Conference dual play Saturday with a 7-0 setback on the road to Lake Forest College. Cornell also scored a dominant 7-0 win over Concordia Chicago during the trip out east.
The Rams (8-3 overall, 4-2 MWC) finished third in the MWC standings for the second straight year, behind Lake Forest (5-1) and Grinnell (6-0). Cornell earned a berth to the MWC Team Tournament next May, where it will face Lake Forest in the semifinals.
Cornell had reeled off three consecutive dual wins prior to Saturday's morning match against the then undefeated Foresters.
Freshmen duo
Alyssa Flynn and
Jenna Benkufsky provided the lone win for the Rams against Lake Forest at No. 2 doubles, topping Margaret Bugnacki/Kate Feist 6-4. Benkufsky also fell in a tightly contested No. 6 singles match, 6-4. 6-7. 10-7.
Facing the Cougars, the Rams jumped out to an early lead claiming the doubles point. No. 1 pair
Mac Graves and
Audrey Small (6-1), Flynn and Benkufsky (6-3) at No. 2, as well as
Isabella Wallin and
Kaylee Hillyard (6-3) at No. 3 swept the doubles matches.
Graves, Small, Flynn, Benkufsky and Hillyard all won their singles matches in straight sets. Wallin, saving a match point in the process, came back from a set down to defeat her opponent at No. 4, 2-6, 6-4, 12-10.
