MADISON, Wis. – Cornell's doubles pairing of
Audrey Small and
Isabella Wallin picked up a runner-up finish in the No. 3 doubles bracket at the Midwest Conference Individual Championships this weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of University of Wisconsin. This marks the first appearance for the Rams in an individual championship match since 2018, when Cami Gricius and Raquel Ruiz were finalists at No. 1 doubles.
Small and Wallin rolled 8-3 over Monmouth in the quarterfinal. Cornell's duo then sprung an 8-4 semifinal upset over Lake Forest, which had beaten the Rams' tandem a week prior in the regular season dual meet between the two teams.
The championship match featured a bout against the top seed from Grinnell. The Pioneers struck with an 8-3 win.
The Rams fielded seven semifinalists throughout the rest of the tournament in five of the singles brackets, along with the other two doubles fields.
Tansy Graves at No. 1,
Mac Graves at No. 2, Small at No. 3,
Alyssa Flynn at No. 4, and
Jenna Benkufsky at No. 6 all captured first rounds singles wins.
Tansy Graves (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Small (6-7, 6-2, 6-1) both prevailed in three sets over opponents from Lawrence in that quarterfinal round.
On the doubles court, the Graves sisters at No. 1 coasted to a first round victory 8-1 over Ripon. The duo fell to second seeded Grinnell 8-4 in the semifinals.
Flynn and Benkufsky avenged a previous defeat to Lawrence from a couple weeks prior, this time capturing an 8-4 victory in the opening round. The pair dropped their semi-final match to top seeded Grinnell 8-2.
The Rams close out the fall season with an 8-3 dual record overall. Through the fall portion,
Mac Graves leads the team in total wins (26), singles wins (14), and shares a team lead (12) doubles wins along with Wallin.
