MOUNT VERNON – Senior
Elissafe Moreno netted her first goal of the season, although Cornell's comeback attempt fell short in Thursday's 3-1 Midwest Conference women's soccer loss to Illinois College under blustery conditions.
The Rams (2-12-1 overall, 1-5-1 MWC) hung tough going into a strong wind in the first half, yielding just one goal late in the period as Illinois College (10-5-3 overall, 2-3-2 MWC) took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Lady Blues gained separation with a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the second half, stretching the margin to 3-0.
Playing in her final home match, Moreno put Cornell on the scoreboard off an assist from first-year
Ava Ferencz in the 66th minute. It was the first collegiate point for Ferencz.
Junior
Sabrina Ibanez recorded seven saves and climbed past Kassi Todryk (2011-14) to No. 3 on Cornell's all-time list. Ibanez raised her career saves total to 280, only 69 shy of the program record.
Gwen Westervelt and Moreno had two shots apiece to lead Cornell's attack. The Lady Blues fired 16 of their 22 attempts in the opening half.
Coming up – The Rams wrap up the season Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. road match against league co-leader Lake Forest (12-2-3 overall, 6-0-1 MWC) in Lake Forest, Ill.
