APPLETON, WI – Cornell's women's tennis team secured a berth in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament, leaving no doubt about it in a pair of 7-0 dual wins over Lawrence and Ripon on the road on Saturday
Coach
Trent Schneider's Rams were dominant in climbing to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the MWC with one league match remaining this fall. Cornell stands third in the league race behind Grinnell (5-0 MWC) and Lake Forest (4-0 MWC).
The two wins qualify the Rams for the four-team NCAA automatic qualifying MWC tournament in May.
Sophomore
Tansy Graves did not drop a single game all day at between No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, cruising to four wins total at the top spots. Sister
Mac Graves picked up four wins of her own, highlighted by a comeback win at No. 2 singles against Lawrence, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. She improves her singles record this season to 12-1, and has a team leading 22 combined victories already this fall.
Audrey Small at No. 3,
Alyssa Flynn at No. 4,
Isabella Wallin at No. 5, and
Jenna Benkufsky at No. 6 also went 2-0 in singles play. Small and Wallin each also enjoyed a 4-0 day individually.
Cornell's No. 1 doubles tandem of Mac and
Tansy Graves won 6-0 over Lawrence and 6-0 over Ripon. They moved to 10-4 as partners this season.
No. 3 duo of Small and Wallin coasted 6-0 and 6-0, boosting their season record to 7-1.
Coming up – The Rams close out the regular season Saturday at Lake Forest and Concordia Chicago. First serve against Lake Forest is set for 9am.
