Back-to-back pins propel Rams to 24-16 win in first home dual

| By:
MOUNT VERNON – Cornell hosted its first-ever women's wrestling dual Friday night and made it one for the memory books with a 24-16 comeback win over Central inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

The Rams closed out the meet with back-to-back pins and celebrated their first dual victory as a second-year varsity program under head coach Boston Jacobs.

Cornell (1-4) trailed 16-14 with two matches remaining against the Dutch (0-1). Momentum quickly shifted in the 180-pound bout, when sophomore Sydney Newberg recorded a quick fall in 51 seconds over Ashlynn Carter-Shook that pushed the Rams ahead 19-16.

Freshman Maddie Pulis then came through big time for the Rams in the decisive 207-pound match. She needed only 40 seconds to secure a dual-clinching pin over Selena Snell.

The Rams won three of the five contested bouts on the night. That included a 12-2 technical fall  in the second period from junior 117-pounder Cheyenne Mulford over Aniya Coleman.

First-year wrestlers Milar Little (110 pounds) and Kyla Andrew (131) both received forfeit wins for Cornell.

Central's Carolina Vargas earned a pin over Ava Garcia at 124. Mary Litherland pinned Cornell's Emma Stevenson at 160. The Dutch won by forfeit at 138. Both teams were open at 103 and 145.

Coming up – The Rams compete at the Gator Boots Duals Dec. 20 in Nashville, Tenn. Cornell has duals scheduled against Delaware Valley, Huntingdon, Emmanuel and Baldwin Wallace.
