Kali March delivered 14 of her career-high 28 points in the final quarter of her final home game, lifting Cornell's women's basketball team to a 66-56 Midwest Conference win over Monmouth Wednesday night inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
March's impressive night moved the Rams (9-15 overall) to 7-8 in the MWC with one regular-season contest left at third-place Knox this weekend. Cornell is one game out of fourth place, which is shared by three teams – Lawrence, Grinnell and Beloit – all at 8-7.
March stepped up when the Rams needed her most, trailing 39-33 early in the third quarter. The all-conference guard scored 19 points over the final 18 minutes of regulation, including four 3-pointers that helped Cornell regain control over the Fighting Scots (2-22 overall, 0-15 MWC).
After Monmouth pulled within 58-54 with 1:31 remaining, March reeled off Cornell's final eight points to seal the victory.
March finished 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc, climbing into a tie with Tiffany Cowan (2005-09) for second place on Cornell's career list for made threes with 143. She also became the 13th Ram to reach 800 points in a career, now at 808.
Ani'ja Simmons and
Heidi Jorgensen pitched in nine points apiece for the Rams. Simmons led the team with six rebounds, while
A'ryn Jackson collected four steals. March dished a team-high four assists.
Cornell held the Fighting Scots to 35.3-percent shooting, including 2-of-16 in the pivotal third quarter.
Coming up – Cornell travels to Galesburg, Ill., for Saturday's regular-season finale against Knox (17-7 overall, 9-6 MWC). Tipoff is 3 p.m.
The Prairie Fire won the first meeting, 69-65.
