Rams battle Vikings in Ovarian Cancer Awareness duals

MOUNT VERNON - Cornell's men's and women's tennis teams took on the Augustana Vikings in a doubleheader Saturday at the Cornell Tennis Courts. The women fell 8-1, while men had their six-dual win streak snapped in a 9-0 loss.

Saturday's duals, which included Coe vs. Augustana, were recognized as Ovarian Cancer Awareness meets. The Cornell and Coe players wore "Her Fight is Our Fight" uniform shirts in honor of Joan Christian, who recently passed away after a four-plus year courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Christian is the mother of Coe assistant coach Claire Christian, Cornell coach Trent Schneider's wife.

In the morning women's dual, all-MWC singles selection Tansy Graves, with partner Ashley Mink, claimed the lone point for the Rams with a nail-biting 8-7 (8) win at No. 2 doubles. All-MWC doubles performer Mac Graves returned to the No. 1 spot with partner Makayla Johnson and battled to a close decision, falling 8-5.

Augustana won five fo the six singles matches in straight sets. Tansy Graves was edged at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3, while Mink dropped a tight third-set tiebreak, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 6.

In the men's afternoon dual, No. 1 duo Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf and Federico Polidori pushed the Vikings pair before ultimately dropping an 8-5 decision.

The Vikings swept the rest of the doubles, and won all six singles matches in straight sets. Trent Devore at No. 3, nearly forced a third set, but was edged 6-4, 7-5.

Coming up - Women's tennis hosts Saint Ambrose at 10 a.m. Sunday. The men host Central at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will take place inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
