ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Cornell's men's lacrosse team rallied for four goals in the final period, although the comeback fell just short in Saturday's 9-7 loss at Augustana.
The Rams (4-5) mounted the charge after trailing 7-3 with less than seven minutes to play in regulation. Cornell trimmed the deficit to 7-5 on back-to-back scores by
Matt Norwood and
Charley Kobets.
After Augustana (3-4) went back ahead 9-5, Norwood and
Luke Baldwin each scored in the final 2:13 to provide the final margin.
Torii Greiskalns accounted for nine ground balls and four caused turnovers to lead the Rams. Kobets provided a team-high three goals and one assist. Baldwin and Norwood both scored twice.
Goalie
Thomas Cook posted 12 saves over 60 minutes.
The Rams held a 41-39 edge in total shots and equaled the Vikings with 34 ground balls. Cornell converted 26-of-29 clear attempts.
Coming up – The Rams open Midwest Lacrosse Conference play next Saturday, March 30, at home against Lake Forest (8-1). Game time is 4 p.m. at Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
