MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's softball team scored first in both games Wednesday, although Coe charged back in the middle innings to earn a 9-1, 9-4 nonconference sweep at Van Metre Family Softball Field.
The Rams (8-7 overall) had their six-game winning streak snapped. The Kohawks, a 2023 College World Series participant, improved to 19-5 on the season.
Cornell, the visiting team on the scoreboard for both games, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opener on a single by
Kaylynn Sparks that scored
Peyton Souhrada in the top of the second. The Rams had the bases loaded with one out, but Coe escaped further damage.
The Kohawks pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second. They broke the game open with three runs in the fourth and then finished it with four in the fifth.
The Rams were held to four hits, including a double by Souhrada.
In Game 2, first-year
Katie DelCorso went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs to pace the Rams. She scored in the third on a bases-loaded groundout by
Miranda Keith, putting the Rams up 1-0.
Coe's potent lineup struck for four runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth to take control.
The Rams trimmed the margin to 8-4 in the fifth, receiving a bases-loaded walk from Keith and a two-run double from
Elise Oleson.
The Kohawks outhit Cornell, 11-4.
Coe earned the final point in the
2023-24 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series and claimed the annual traveling trophy by a 12-3 advantage.
Coming up – The Rams (2-0 MWC) travel to play Lake Forest (2-0 MWC) in a battle of league unbeatens at 3 p.m. Thursday in Lake Forest, Ill.
