MOUNT VERNON – The Rams had a one-run lead slip away in the late innings Monday night, falling 11-4 to Monmouth in Midwest Conference baseball action at Ash Park Field.
Cornell concluded a busy eight-game, eight-day stretch at 4-4.
The Rams (13-14 overall, 4-9 MWC) struck twice in the bottom of the seventh, getting an RBI groundout from
Cade Parks and an RBI single from
Vince Zipperer to take a 4-3 advantage.
Monmouth (12-12 overall, 5-6 MWC) retaliated with five runs in the top of the eighth, stringing together five consecutive hits. The Fighting Scots tacked on three more runs in the ninth to close it out.
The Rams collected nine hits and stranded 12 total runners, including the bases loaded in the ninth.
Cornell No. 2 hitter
Sean Alvarez reached base safely in his 27th consecutive game, going 3-for-5 with a run. The junior first baseman stretched his hitting streak to 11 games.
Sophomore
Jack Rogers hammered a solo home run to left in the fourth, becoming the ninth Ram to homer this season. Zipperer added two hits.
Cornell starting right-hander
Jake Schope recorded a season-high nine strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed three runs.
Coming up – The Rams travel to Jacksonville, Ill., this weekend for a three-game series with Illinois College (17-11 overall, 4-8 MWC). Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, followed by a single game at noon Sunday.
