LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Cornell's historic season of women's lacrosse came to a close Wednesday with a 16-7 semifinal loss to No. 2 seed Lake Forest in the MLC Tournament at Farwell Field.
The No. 3 seed Rams finished the campaign at 13-4, smashing the previous wins record of 10 set in 2023. The team placed a program-best third in the MLC regular season at 3-2.
Two of Cornell's losses this spring were against the Foresters (13-3), who will face No. 1 seed Saint Benedict (9-4) in Saturday's championship for an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Cornell stayed with the Foresters early, receiving the initial goal of the contest from
Cece Zanoni and then tying the score at 2-2 on a free position shot by
Anna Methe.
The Foresters turned momentum with a 6-0 spurt during a 15-minute stretch in the first half that put the home team ahead 8-2.
The Rams pulled within 11-5 on a
Sabrina Ibanez free position conversion with 3:42 left in the third quarter, but Cornell would get no closer the rest of the way.
The dynamic duo of
India Smith and Zanoni led Cornell's attack with three points apiece, each contributing two goals and one assist. Zanoni and Smith finished with the top two single-season scoring totals in program history with 87 and 86 points, respectively.
Ibanez scored twice and won four draw controls. Methe added one goal and one assist.
Hannah Miech tallied 12 saves over 60 minutes in goal.
Lake Forest held a 26-12 advantage in ground balls and outshot the Rams, 34-20.
Cornell broke single-season program records in virtually all statistical team categories, including 303 points and 226 goals in 17 games.
