MORRIS, Minn. – Senior
George Archer is the most prolific scorer in Cornell history, and showed just why in Saturday's 3-0 men's soccer win over Minnesota Morris at Cougar Field.
Archer netted his 32nd and 33rd career goals – both in the first half – to set the tone in the Rams' season-opening victory on the road.
Archer needed only 58 seconds to etch his name in the 2024 scoring column, converting a penalty kick that quickly put the Rams ahead 1-0. Midway through the opening half, sophomore
Sam Burmeister assisted Archer with his second score and Cornell took the 2-0 advantage into intermission.
The Rams added insurance at the 63-minute mark when senior
Will Bickel knocked in an assisted goal from
Aidan Lerch.
Cornell's defense was stout throughout, limiting the Cougars (0-2) to four total shots. Fifth-year goalkeeper
Jeremy Spina recorded a clean sheet with one save over the 90 minutes.
The Rams fired off 15 shots, including four by Archer and three from
Gaurab Khadka.
Coming up – The Rams are on the road Thursday for a 4 p.m. match against Blackburn in Carlinville, Ill.
