APPLETON, Wis. – First-year
Erin Knowles became the fifth player in Cornell history to score 400 points in a season in Saturday's 78-56 women's basketball setback to Midwest Conference's second-place Lawrence at Alexander Gym.
Knowles netted a game-high 21 points, her ninth 20-point performance of the season. The 6-foot-1 forward boosted her season points total to 408, which ranks third-most all-time.
The loss moved Cornell (12-10 overall, 8-6 MWC) to fifth place in the league race with two games to go. The Rams are one game behind fourth-place Knox, which travels to Cornell for the regular-season finale Feb. 22.
The Rams had their work cut out against hot-shooting Lawrence (18-6 overall, 12-3 MWC), which sank 11 3-pointers in the game and shot 49.1 percent from the floor. The Vikings received 48 points from their bench, including 21 from Kate Adams.
Reagan Wells posted nine points, five rebounds and four assists for the Rams.
Rylee VanDresar hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points.
The Rams trailed by as many as 18 points in the second quarter, although closed within 47-39 on a
Maya Hodge layup with less than four minutes to go in the third period.
Cornell's comeback bid stalled on 3-of-15 shooting in the final period as Lawrence pulled away.
Coming up – Cornell visits Monmouth (5-18 overall, 2-12 MWC) for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff Wednesday in Monmouth, Ill. The Rams took the first meeting, 61-55.
