MELBOURNE, Fla. – Senior right-hander
Hannah Rhoades fired seven shutout innings of three-hit ball to carry Cornell's softball team to a 1-0 victory over Wheaton Wednesday at the Space Coast Spring Games.
The Rams (3-1) dropped the opening game of the day to unbeaten Marietta, 13-2 in five innings.
Rhoades (1-0) faced only two batters over the minimum in the complete-game shutout. She struck out two and did not allow a walk. Wheaton had just one runner advance past first base, a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh.
Cornell plated the only run it needed in the top of the third.
Elise Oleson doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a groundout by
Peyton Souhrada.
Brooke Furman collected two of Cornell's five hits.
Cornell led 2-0 after one inning against Marietta (7-0), which came back to score 13 unanswered runs. The Pioneers outhit Cornell, 18-7.
Linnea Drever went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Souhrada also drove in a run.
Brianna Risley and
Miranda Keith each scored one run.
