MOUNT VERNON – Senior shortstop
Kale Rose became Cornell's career leader for runs scored during an otherwise quiet day for the Rams' offense in Saturday's 12-4, 6-1 Midwest Conference baseball losses to Illinois College at Ash Park Field.
The Rams (9-16 overall, 2-6 MWC) look to salvage the final game of the series with the second-place Blueboys (18-11 overall, 6-4 MWC) at noon Sunday in Mount Vernon.
Rose came around to score his record-setting 129th run on a two-RBI single by
Cade Parks in the fourth inning of Game 1. Rose broke Cornell's all-time mark of 128 runs, set by Hall of Famer Chet Knake from 2000-03.
Rose drew a pair of walks in Game 2 and extended his consecutive reached base streak to 22 games.
The visiting Blueboys set the tone early in Game 1, scoring three times in the first inning and stretching the lead to 7-0 through three. The Rams committed three errors in the field that resulted in three unearned runs.
Mason Sellers led Cornell's seven-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run.
Thomas Hunt collected two hits, including a double.
Cornell's batting lineup had its work cut out in Game 2 against reigning MWC Pitcher of the Week Charlie Lardi (6-0), who scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings. The left-hander struck out eight.
The Rams were outhit, 14-5, and had four errors in the field.
Cornell's lone run came in the ninth when
Ryan Weaver tripled and scored on a hit by Parks.
Cornell starter
Vince Tinajero tossed 5.2 innings, yielding four earned runs and striking out two.
Grant Morris held the Blueboys scoreless over the final 3.1 frames, allowing just two hits.
