APPLETON, Wis. – Cornell's softball team fell victim to a pair of late-inning rallies by host Lawrence in Saturday's 9-8, 8-7 Midwest Conference losses at Whiting Field.
In Game 1, the Rams (10-15 overall, 2-4 MWC) took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Vikings (9-15 overall, 4-2 MWC) mounted an improbable comeback with two outs.
Lawrence extended the game with a hit batsman, two consecutive hits and back-to-back walks before delivering a three-run triple to win it.
Cornell's
Elise Oleson tagged her seventh homer of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth.
Brooke Furman and
Addie Bowman collected three hits apiece.
Kloi Barney and
Peyton Souhrada both went 2-for-4 at the plate.
In Game 2, Lawrence rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take its first lead at 8-7. The Rams loaded the bases in the top of the seventh when the scoring threat stalled on a game-ending groundout to shortstop.
Brianna Risley and Souhrada both homered for the Rams, who outhit the home team, 12-10. Souhrada went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Risley, Oleson and Barney also had two hits apiece.
Coming up – The Rams continue their road swing Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against second-place Ripon (7-15 overall, 5-1 MWC) in Ripon, Wis.
