MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's bats came to life Monday night and sparked a 19-8 Bremner Cup baseball blowout over No. 22 nationally-ranked Coe at Ash Park Field.
The Rams (10-17) racked up 18 hits – seven for extra bases – and dealt their Linn County rival its most lopsided loss of the season. Coe (21-6), which stands atop the American Rivers Conference, had won 11 of its past 12 games coming in.
Cornell knotted the
2024-25 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series at 6-6 with three head-to-head competitions remaining this spring.
Batting leadoff and making his first start of the season, senior
Lincoln Greasley got the Rams off and running with his first collegiate home run, a three-run blast that put Cornell ahead 6-1 in the second inning.
The Rams then put the game away during a seven-run sixth inning as the margin ballooned to 18-7.
Brendan Alvarez delivered a three-run double and
Cade Parks connected for a two-run double in the frame.
Catcher
Esteban Perez reached base six times, going 3-for-3 with a double, four runs, one RBI and three walks. Alvarez and Parks tallied three hits apiece and both doubled twice. Alvarez finished with four RBIs.
Seth Beals went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Greasley and
Sean Alvarez also provided three RBIs apiece for the Rams, who outhit the Kohawks 18-9.
Cai Brevig (1-0) pitched 3.2 innings of middle relief to earn the victory. He allowed just two hits and one run, which was unearned, while striking out three.
Karson Rose worked the final two innings, yielding one run.
Coming up – The Rams (2-7 MWC) begin a three-game Midwest Conference series against Monmouth (10-17 overall, 5-6 MWC) Friday with a 5 p.m. single game in Mount Vernon. The teams play a noon doubleheader Saturday in Monmouth, Ill.
