MADISON, WI. – Cornell had its dual season come to an end in Friday's 4-0 semifinal loss to No. 2 seed Lake Forest in the Midwest Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The third-seeded Rams, who entered the tournament winning five of their last six, closed at 16-9 overall. Cornell took third in the MWC regular season for the third consecutive year.
The Foresters (10-9 overall) claimed their third consecutive dual win and advanced to the championship to face top-seeded Grinnell Friday afternoon. The champion earns the MWC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Foresters swept doubles to take the doubles point entering singles play. Cornell provided resistance with close first sets in a number of spots throughout the lineup.
In the three finished singles matches,
Zachary Ong lost 6-1 6-1 at No. 2,
Drew Campbell fell 6-2 6-0 at No. 3, and
Edwin Holyoake dropped his match 6-0 6-1 at No. 5
Trent Devore dropped at tight first set at No. 1 7-6, while
August Krahn battled to a 7-5 deficit at No. 6 in matches that went unfinished.
The Rams now prepare for the MWC Individual Championships, contested Saturday and Sunday in Madison, WI.
