MOUNT VERNON, IOWA - The Cornell women's tennis team played two teams at home, splitting the day, winning 7-0 over Concordia University of Chicago (0-7), and dropping a 3-4 decision to Wartburg College (8-3).
To start the morning, the Rams (6-1, 2-0 MWC) swept doubles, with dominant 6-2, 6-1 scorelines at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point, and a close 7-6 (5) victory at No. 1 doubles from sophomore Jenna Benkufsky and freshman Meredith Maxwell.
The Rams continued to dominate in singles, with straight set wins for the remainder of the match. Junior Isabella Wallin and Maxwell finished with 6-0, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-2, scorelines respectively. Senior Ashley Drake took a dominant win at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, sophomore Kortney Travis won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2, and freshman Mirabel Pinkerton found a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6. Benkufsky pulled out a close first set 6-4, and finished the match 6-0 in the second.
In the afternoon, the Rams faced off against Wartburg College, starting at a deficit in doubles. Benkufsky and Wallin secured the lone victory with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, with pairs of Travis and Maxwell falling at No. 2, 6-2, and Drake and Pinkerton losing a close-fought tiebreaker 7-5 (2).
The Rams picked up play in singles, with wins at the No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 positions. Benkufsky pulled out another tight match, 7-5, 6-1, and Travis took a win at No. 5, with a 6-4, 6-2 scoreline. Drake came back to win from a set down at No. 4, 2-6, 7-5, 10-2. The Rams fell in two other positions from tiebreaks, with Wallin at No. 2, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6, and Maxwell falling at No. 3, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4.
Benkufsky finished with a successful record of 4-0 in matches today. Wallin, Travis, and Drake all finished the day 3-1 in matches.
Coming up - The Rams will play at home next Sunday, against Simpson College and Bremner Cup rival Coe College. First serve is set for 12:30PM against the Storm.
