Rams survive OT battle at Lake Forest, 53-49

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – First-year Darby Haley tossed in a collegiate-best 19 points and Cornell's women's basketball team survived an overtime scare at Lake Forest with Saturday's 53-49 Midwest Conference victory at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The Rams (13-5 overall, 7-3 MWC) seized their sixth consecutive victory, and moved into a tie for third place in the league standings with Knox (9-10, 7-3 MWC) with six games remaining. Cornell hosts the Prairie Fire on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

On Saturday afternoon, Haley kept the Rams afloat early by contributing nine of Cornell's 16 first-half points. The 5-foot-6 guard went 7-of-13 from the floor in the game, and 4-of-10 from long range. Haley added six rebounds and two steals.

Cornell played from behind for over 32 minutes in the low-scoring contest, and trailed 39-33 to Lake Forest (2-18 overall, 0-11 MWC) with nearly eight-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation.

Two-time defending MWC Performer of the Week Erin Knowles keyed Cornell's 10-4 run to close the fourth quarter, scoring seven points during that stretch. Knowles tied the score at 43-43 with two free throws at the 1:10 mark to force overtime.

Cornell surrendered the first point of the extra session to the Foresters, then took the lead for good 41 seconds in with a Kallynn Stroup layup. Following the Rams and Lake Forest exchanging baskets, Haley knocked down a clutch straightaway triple to stretch the Cornell advantage to four.

Caroline Kron put the game on ice with two made foul shots in the final seconds. The Rams outscored Lake Forest, 10-6, in OT.

Knowles posted her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Stroup chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. Heidi Jorgensen hauled in six boards and dished out three assists.

Despite shooting 24.2-percent from the floor, Cornell converted 17-of-23 (73.9 percent) from the line.

The game marked Cornell's first overtime contest since Jan. 23, 2024 at Illinois College.
