MOUNT VERNON - Cornell's men's tennis team made its 2026 debut Saturday, earning two dual wins in the arena of the Small Athletic and Wellness Center. The Rams (4-0) claimed a 6-1 triumph over Martin Luther College in the morning, followed by a 5-2 win over Loras College in the afternoon. This is the first time since 2020 that Cornell has started the spring campaign securing two victories on opening day.
Against Martin Luther, the Rams swept all three doubles positions. Freshmen duo
Henry Lambley and
Gavin Collyott at No. 1, sophomore
Sam Cumicek and freshman
Matthew Oshiro at No. 2, and sophomore tandem
Eric Dirksmeyer and
Benett Gregor at No. 3 all finished with 6-3 victories.
Cornell claimed straight set wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 from
Jack Saunders, Collyott, Cumicek and Gregor. Oshiro pulled through for a 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 win at No. 3.
Against Loras in the afternoon, the Rams continued their stellar play in doubles earning the point. No. 1 duo Trent Devore and Mills Arnold raced to a 6-3 win, while the No. 2 pairing of Lambley and Saunders clinched the decider 6-4.
The singles bouts were tight all the way through. Cornell scored straight set wins by Devore, Saunders and Arnold at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 respectively. Lambley provided the clinch at No. 5 thanks to a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 decision. Loras took the remaining two singles matches.
Saundes and Lambley enjoyed 3-0 days individually, along with five other Rams finishing 2-0 on the day.
Coming up - The Rams travel to Cedar Rapids, IA next weekend for a triangular against host Coe College and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Feb 7th. The dual against Coe College is a Bremner Cup matchup.
